SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of getting your site discovered by search engines, understood by them, and trusted by them. When SEO works correctly, people who are looking for what you have to offer will see your site first. This is a long term strategy that can take many months to develop. Once developed, this strategy will continue to generate results even when there has been no new content created on your site.
What is SEO, and how does it work?
A search engine accomplishes three tasks. The first is to crawl web pages; the second is to store those pages into an index; the third task is to rank the pages after a user enters a search query.
Each phase of SEO requires different elements. At the crawling stage, you need to provide a well-organized website. For the indexing phase, you must produce quality content that is worth saving. Finally, in order to rank high in search results, you must show that your page has provided the best possible answer to the query compared to all other pages.
Imagine you're visiting a library; the search engine would be the librarian. A page from your website would be like a book in that library. SEO ensures the book gets put on a shelf, has the correct label, and can be recommended to someone else.
Why does SEO still matter?
As long as the majority of consumers continue to initiate their searches on-line, marketers understand this. According to HubSpot's 2026 State of Marketing Report, on-line channels such as websites, blogs, and SEO are among those that have generated the highest return-on-investment.
The problem is that the majority of pages on the Internet do not receive organic search results. A study by Ahrefs found that approximately 96.55 percent of all pages on the web receive no organic search traffic. That's where SEO comes into play as a means to bridge the gap between these pages and those that users can locate.
What are the main types of SEO?
The whole of the text is divided into four sections.
Technical SEO
The site loads fast, works on phones, and has no crawl errors. Core Web Vitals live here. This is why a well-built website is the base of everything else. You can't optimize a slow, broken site into the rankings.
On-page SEO
Each page has a clear topic, a good title, useful headings, and honest answers. Layout matters too. Clear design keeps visitors reading, which supports every other signal.
Off-page SEO
Other credible websites will include links to your site or reference your site.
Local SEO
When someone is searching for a business near them, or in a specific city, your Google Business Profile will appear. Most of the work has already been done with a complete profile.
How does AI search change SEO?
The change in where people click on links will alter how we look at search results. Ranking isn't enough; you now want to be the one that is being quoted by the AI.
The drop in clicks is real. According to Ahrefs, there has been a decrease of 58% in the average click-through rate of the top organic search result as a direct consequence of the AI Overview feature. The risk is greatest for simple questions. Approximately 39.4% of all informational queries will include an AI Overview; however, only 4% of e-commerce queries will have one.
- Put the answer in the first two sentences.
- Use question headings.
- Add FAQ and Article schema.
- Update pages often. AI-cited content is 25.7% fresher on average than pages ranking in regular results.
- Show up where AI looks. One 2026 study found YouTube cited in 57% of the AI Overviews it recorded and Reddit in 20%.
Some people refer to this as either AEO (answer engine optimization) or GEO (generate engine optimization). At the end of the day it is still SEO. Regardless of what name you use, your goal remains the same: provide the clearest, most trustworthy answer to any query.
How long does SEO take?
Early traffic on most sites happens within 3 to 6 months. However, the more competitive terms used in search engine optimization (SEO) will require more time to produce results. Also, if your site is brand-new and has no incoming links, it will likely be a while before you begin receiving any significant amount of traffic.
Do not trust any person that says they will put you on page one within thirty days. No one is in control of Google.
How much does SEO cost?
Prices are all over the place. A study conducted among SEO professionals provides a lower bound for what people charge. Of those surveyed, the majority (20.4 percent) indicated that their most frequently used monthly retainer was in the range of $501 - $1,000. In addition, the most prevalent project fee was in the range of $2,501 - $5,000.
Consider these numbers as those of an independent contractor (freelancer). Firms that have staff specializing in strategy, content creation, and technical support will generally be able to provide higher pricing. Find out exactly what your investment covers. The number of hours provided do not give a complete picture.
How can you spot bad SEO?
Watch for these.
- Your search results are guaranteed.
- Packages are linked together based upon the quantity of packages purchased.
- On other people's blogs, there are many guest posts that no one views.
- Press releases that are loaded up with keywords to provide link juice.
Google has been very clear regarding what they consider "link spam" as well as the rules governing how these types of links should be handled. Their spam policy states that link spam includes all links that have been created primarily to influence search engine results. This would include paid links, and optimized anchor text within guest posts or press releases posted to other websites. These types of links may only be allowed if they are tagged with either "nofollow" or "sponsored."
SEO done right looks different than it does when it's done poorly. When SEO is done correctly, it takes longer and is simpler. This involves making improvements to the website, creating valuable content, and building links based on the quality of your work.
How do you start SEO?
Start small.
- List the ten questions your most loyal customers will typically ask you prior to purchasing a product or service.
- I would use both Google Keyword Planner and Search Console to determine how much demand exists for each keyword.
- One page for each question. One page on each topic.
- Fix speed; fix mobile layout; fix broken links.
- You need to add Schema to all of your pages, and also create links between them.
- Review results each month. Keep up-to-date with any items that are slipping behind.
The best approach is to select those keywords which generate revenue. Do not try to pursue every possible keyword.
